Having put an end to their losing streak on Thursday of last week, the 49ers had some extra time to get healthy, and to prepare for the Packers game this coming week. This is a crucial game for the 49ers in terms of the wild card race, as well as to keep pace with Arizona in the NFC West playoff hunt. With such an important game on the line, and a rather un-impressive showing in their "victory" on Thursday night, one would think the team would take advantage of every possible minute to ensure it was ready to win this coming Sunday.
The 49ers chose differently though. They made a choice better suited for a team with a winning or perfect record. It has been reported that the team was off Friday to Sunday, with meetings only on Monday. They begin on-field preparation for Green Bay, perhaps the biggest game of the season, on Tuesday, like any other week. Much in the same way that the 49ers were not able to capitalize on the time off they had during the bye week, they have squandered this advantage too.
I understand the importance of keeping a team fresh, and allowing for recovery, but certainly some game planning over the weekend could have at least given the 49ers a day or two advantages heading into this week. Instead, the team opted to act as if this is just another game, which it is not, and to make a choice more suitable for a clearly playoff bound team, which they are not. I certainly hope it will not come back to bite them, but I have a hard time believing this was the right move; especially in light of the obvious additional pressure that will be placed on Alex Smith (see Rodgers, Aaron) this weekend.
